Background of AAN
AAN constructed nearly one hundred alternative water devices to provide safe drinking water in many arsenic affected areas of Khulna division. AAN established an Environmental Laboratory in Jessore in 2002 to check the water quality parameters of alternative safe water devices and cross check results tested in the field. The Laboratory also carries out researches on arsenic issues, and provides support to other organizations, institutes and NGOs working for arsenic mitigation.

Importance of Water Quality Test
In Bangladesh 70% of all diseases is caused by the use of unsafe water. The water quality testing laboratory plays an important role to know the quality of water for healthy life and environment.
|
Laboratory Instruments
The laboratory is equipped with various instruments such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), Spectrophotometer, bacteriological testing equipment including Incubator, physical parameter testing equipment, oven, titration facility, distilled water plant, electronic balance, micro pipette, GPS, refrigerator, air-conditioner, fume hood to handle toxic chemicals and generator for emergency electricity supply |
|
Instrument Calibration
All of the instruments are regularly calibrated by the known standard solution at every operation |
Field Testing Facility
After sampling, some of the water quality parameters change very quickly. So, it is important to check some parameters in the field and for other parameters sample water is preserved with appropriate chemicals for laboratory analysis. AAN uses a microbus to carry instruments to sites and bring samples back from sites to laboratory |
Laboratory Staff
Chemists, laboratory assistants and water samplers are working in the laboratory. One Chemist received trainings on water quality analysis at various Japanese universities and institutes, and other staff are trained by some visiting Japanese experts in Bangladesh . |
Cross Check
AAN regularly has analytical results cross-checked by other laboratories. Those laboratories are BUET, NGO Forum, Jadavpur University of India, Miyazaki Environmental Science Association Foundation, Fukuoka City Institute for Hygiene and Environment, and Miyazaki University of Japan. |
Chemicals
All of the laboratory chemicals are of Analar grade. The names of some suppliers are BDH (England), Wako (Japan), Kanto (Japan), Merck (Germany), Riedel-Haen (Germany), Becton Dikinson (USA), and HACH (USA). |
Research Program
AAN has both expertise and instrumental facilities to conduct a research on arsenic issues. Please contact us to conduct research work jointly, or to check water quality parameters, or consult about your drinking water quality. |
Laboratory Rules
AAN maintains laboratory rules and safety regulation during the water sampling, water analysis, and disposal of laboratory wastage after proper neutralization. |
