Construction of PSF begins at a madrasa in Fenua village, Comilla

The Utter Fenua Hossainia Kawmi Madrasa accommodates about 500 pupils, both boys and girls, in a day. If you happen to pass by the madrasa, you will hear children's voices in high spirits chanting multiplication tables, Bengali alphabet, or whatnots. The madrasa is in Fenua village, Utter Hawla Union, Monoharganj Upazila of Comilla District. A mosjit and an orphanage are also attached to the madrasa, the mosjit being visited with about 300 villagers for prayer on Fridays.

When the Asia Arsenic Network (AAN) checked the water of three tube wells in the premises earlier, all of them were found to contain arsenic of around 0.5mg/L, ten times higher than the Bangladesh permissible level of 0.05mg/L. It was necessary, therefore, to provide an alternative safe drinking water device to the madrasa urgently. AAN was lucky to find a philanthropist who donated the fund to construct a pond sand filter (PSF), a device to purify pond water through gravel and sand filters.

The construction work of the PSF began on 1st December and will be completed by the end of the year. It is hoped that the PSF will be able to supply safe drinking water to the madrasa pupils and the community before the Eid-ul-Azha, around 10 January 2006.
