AAN Bangladesh-Background

In Bangladesh , AAN initially carried out a pilot study in Samta village, Sharsha Upazila, Jessore District, in collaboration with the Department of Occupational & Environmental Health of the National Institute of Preventive & Social Medicine (NIPSOM) for three years during March 1997 and March 2000 with a financial grant from the Toyota Foundation. The final report of the Samta study proposed a comprehensive approach to mitigate the arsenic contamination problem involving experts of medical, chemical, water supply engineering and sociological fields. The idea was developed into a "Mobile Arsenic Centre" project, and AAN opened an office in Dhaka in March 2000 to conduct the project.

Between 2002 and 2004, AAN undertook an arsenic mitigation project on a larger scale under the JICA Partnership Programme. The project titled an "Integrated Approach for the Mitigation of Arsenic Contamination of Drinking Water in Bangladesh " was carried out in Sharsha Upazila, Jessore District.

Currently, AAN is conducting an arsenic mitigation project titled "Community Development for Safe Water and Healthy Living in the Rural Areas" in Panjia Union, Keshabpur Upazila, Jessore District.
